Model Gigi Hadid made headlines last week when she elbowed a fan who tried to pick her up. The fan turned out to be Vitalii Sediuk, a Ukranian “prankster” who gets off on harassing and assaulting celebrities. Some rushed to Sediuk’s defense, claiming Hadid should have lightened up and taken more kindly to the prank. But most people got the picture: Grabbing a woman in public without her permission isn’t just uncool—it’s terrifying and invasive—and Hadid had every right to fight back.
Unfortunately, Sediuk has struck again. He “accidentally” ran into Kim Kardashian on the streets of Paris yesterday and decided to kiss her ass. Yes, you read that right. Sediuk snuck up on Kardashian and pressed his lips to her butt. Actually. Sediuk later told the Associated Press that he did that in protest, trying to “popularize natural beauty among teenage girls.” Because kissing someone’s ass uninvitedly definitely gets that done.
Sarcasm aside, I have to pose the question: Why the f*ck is this happening?
I think it’s safe to say most of us don’t find this funny. Like, things that are funny: this video of Helen Mirren shutting down a sexist interviewer, the fact that Rick Perry was on Dancing With The Stars (RIP), and most things Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard do. Things that aren’t funny: Assaulting celebrities—and specifically terrorizing women—in the middle of the street.
Sediuk has performed inappropriate, sexual pranks before, like crawling under actress America Ferrera’s gown at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2014. Ferrera called the incident “shocking and violating,” leading some to call for him to be charged with sexual assault. He wasn’t, but his actions got him fired from his job at an Ukrainian news station and alienated by many in the industry.
And just in case you were curious, here’s an extensive timeline of Sediuk’s other pranks:
September 2011: Sediuk hands Madonna hydrangeas because he knows she hates them. She frowns, leading the press to criticize her for being a snob.
May 2012: Sediuk kisses Will Smith. Smith retaliates by slapping Sediuk and asking, “What the hell is your problem buddy?”
February 2013: Sediuk storms the Grammy stage and murmurs something into the microphone after Adele wins an award. He’s charged with “willfully leaving a spectator area and entering a performance area” and “interfering and delaying program participants,” and receives a 6-month suspended sentence.
January 2014: Sediuk grabs Bradley Cooper’s legs at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards. Cooper attemps to smile as security handles the incident.
February 2014: Sediuk buries his head in Leonardo DiCaprio’s crotch at a film festival. He is removed by security.
February 2014: Sediuk streaks a runway at New York Fashion Week.
May 2014: Sediuk crawls under America Ferrera’s gown at the Cannes Film Festival.
September 2014: Sediuk shoves Kim Kardashian to the ground in Paris and apologizes, saying he “didn’t mean any harm.”
September 2014: Sediuk strips down to a thong and hugs Ciara before being pulled away by security.
October 2015: Sediuk sneaks up on Miranda Kerr and kisses her on the cheek.
September 2016: Sediuk grabs Gigi Hadid from behind because he doesn’t think she’s a true high fashion model.
September 2016: Sediuk kisses Kim Kardashian’s butt to fight unrealistic beauty standards.
Funny, right? Didn’t think so. (Also, ew.)
So Vitalii Sediuk, this is an open plea from all of us to you: Please stop assaulting celebrities. Please stop accosting them, please stop harassing them, and—to use your words—please stop “pranking” them. It’s not funny or charming or endearing. In fact, it’s aggressive, creepy, and pretty damn annoying. So just like…please stop. For your sake and for ours.
