'Freaked out' Does this spooky wedding selfie show ghostly face of Queen Charlotte?

Queen Charlotte is rumoured to haunt the pub, and evidence surfaced when she was caught on camera

Jessica Smith, 25, was taking photographs of her and boyfriend Cody Rudland along with the newlyweds at the reception at the Bear Hotel in Devizes, Wiltshire, on Saturday September 17.

However when her older sister Kate, 36, was looking through the snaps the next day she noticed what looked like an extra pair of eyes peering out from above Jessica’s head, which she claims turn to look at the camera between photos.

Kate believes the ghostly face bears an uncanny resemblance to Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, who she says had a similar hair style and is rumoured to haunt the hotel after lodging there in 1817.

However the duo have been unable to show the image to their sister, who they have chosen not to name, as they believe it could scare her and tarnish her wedding memories.

To be honest I can’t think about it too much as don’t want to think she is following me

Jessica, a florist from Chippenham, Wiltshire, said: “I didn’t even notice it at first. Kate pointed it out and now it’s the first thing I notice.

“She turns her head and even moves around. To be honest I watch a lot of horror films but it does look like something.

“We haven’t shown it to my sister because it could really freak her out. I love all of the supernatural but she doesn’t and I wouldn’t want to affect her [memory of the wedding] day.

Queen Charlotte was married to George III, and her face is clearly seen in the wedding selfie

“The picture was a bit on my mind the first night but after weekend I slept well and didn’t think much about it anymore.

“To be honest I can’t think about it too much as don’t want to think she is following me. But it didn’t stop us having a good time.

“When we were both young me and my sister who got married were visited in the night by an old lady with long white hair while we were in bed.

“Our ears were ringing and we couldn’t move and she sat on my sister’s bed. Stuff like that makes this [picture] scary.

“I slept with the TV on every night for six years after that.”

Mum-of-three Kate, a sales assistant who now lives in Belfast, was the first to spot the strange shape in the photo and showed it to Jessica.

Kate said: “The pictures went straight on Facebook so when I saw them on there I thought it was a fifth person in the photo.

“I saw it straight away. In some of the photos she is not there but in others she changes direction of the way she looks.

The sisters kept the revelation secret from their married sister, to not spoil her special day

“People had said that the pub is supposed to be haunted by Queen Charlotte. I googled her and in all of the images she has a hair style just like in the picture. It reminds me of her.

“I am often sceptical [of pictures of ghosts]. It could be light or condensation but the other pictures show her still there and moving.

“I have only showed some members of the family. I can’t let my sister see it as she could freak out. I think she would be quite sceptical but I wouldn’t want to ruin her memory of the big day.

“I am quite sceptical usually but that picture has not been touched at all and it’s changed my opinion on all of it. I know it’s not been edited.

“I was quite freaked out by this as I saw it straight away. I have never seen [a supernatural picture] as clear as this one. I believe there was something there.”

Lee Fenn, general manager of The Bear Hotel, said that legend has it the hotel is haunted by Queen Charlotte after she allegedly lodged there in 1817.

He said that those who had seen the apparition described her as “wearing an off the shoulder dress with long lace cuffs and a wide skirt”.

Despite seeing Jessica and Kate’s photo, Lee remains a sceptic however.

Mr Fenn said: “I’m quite a sceptic [when it comes to ghosts]. It would take an awful lot to convince me and I have never seen [a picture] that convinces me yet.

“That window [in Jessica’s selfie] back onto the street. It could be a reflection from street. That’s what I thought – I am always looking for an explanation.”
