Take one look at Julianne Hough‘s ridiculously defined abs, and you know she’s on that workout grind. While her training routine is intense, she sticks with it for more than just the body benefits. “My whole thing is, I’m not doing it necessarily to make my body look good—I’m doing it because I love it and it’s fun,” Hough tells SELF. “I feel way better when I’m working out. Once I’ve taken care of myself I can be happy and joyful and do things at my top ability, and I feel like I can give the best version of myself [to other people].”
Hough definitely gave everyone her best at a workout she led this week with DanceBody founder Katia Pryce in honor of her fall collection with MPG Sport. Before putting us mere mortals through a sweaty but criminally fun dance cardio class, Hough chatted with me about what her weekly fitness routine entails. What I learned is that Hough is a fan of mixing it up with her workout routine—whether she’s pushing her legs to the limit at indoor cycling or embracing her bouncy personality at a trampoline fitness class, she’s always moving to stay healthy.
“A lot of people are like, ‘man, you’re so busy, how do you fit it in?’ But that’s my key thing: I don’t ‘fit’ it in, I schedule it in,” she says. For Hough, the morning is the time to get it done. “It sets the tone for the day for the rest of the day,” she says. “But I would not say that I’m a morning person, though. It takes everything that I have to get out of bed.”
She typically gets #UpNOut with a homemade juice. “My fiancé [hockey player Brooks Laich] is the cutest and bought us a juicer—he goes to the farmer’s market and juices it for us. It’s mainly because he wants it, I just reap the benefits,” she laughs. And after her workout, she reaches for a tasty protein shake.
In between the yummy pre- and post-workout snacks, though, Hough works hard. Here’s how she got her fitness on last week.
Monday: Trampoline Cardio at Body By Simone
“I’m a high-energy person, so I really like those high-energy, sweat-it-out workouts,” says Hough. And to kick off the week, a Body By Simone trampoline class was the way to go.
Tuesday: Hot Yoga at CorePower Yoga
“Because I’m high-energy, yoga kind of just grounds me. It makes me feel more centered and balanced. And I like hot yoga because it really stretches me out,” she says. You can do yoga anywhere, but Hough is a CorePower Yoga fan because you can pretty much find a studio in any city, she told me when we chatted in April.
Wednesday: Workout with Tracy Anderson
Celeb trainer Tracy Anderson‘s known for her intense, sweaty dance cardio routines and Hough counts the workout as one of her favorites. And as fun as it sounds to be a part of a private training sesh with Hough and Anderson, it also sounds like a serious challenge.
Indoor cycling is a great way to zone out while you sweat it out (and burn serious calories, too). Hough’s in good company at SoulCycle, too—Lea Michele is also a major fan.
Friday: Rest Day
Even when Hough isn’t doing an actual workout, she likes to keep moving. “My favorite thing to do is, like, little five-minute bursts. If I can’t work out, I’ll just find somewhere to do five minutes of something. It’s just about being active.”
Saturday: CrossFit-Inspired Beach Workout
“On Saturday, I went to the beach and did a beach workout,” says Hough. Laich does CrossFit, so she joined in on a workout with him. “I was like, ‘alright, I’ll go try it,’ and it was so hard. Working out on the sand is hard, but it’s also so great.”
Sunday: Rest Day
Well deserved after that week of training.
Having a balanced routine, like Hough’s, is key for seeing progress and preventing boredom. The perfect week of working out includes a mix of cardio, strength, and flexibility training—and Hough definitely hits all three. And no matter how busy her schedule is, she says she’ll always find time to log a dance cardio workout.
“Even if I weren’t a dancer, I would love dance cardio,” says Hough. “I love music, I love community, I love people, and I feel like when you’re in a room full of like-minded people who just want to have fun, it goes by so fast! It’s so fun. And with dance cardio, I feel like you’re using muscles in your body that are hard to reach. And you’re actively going into movements [like squats and lunges], and you’re lengthening at the same time, too. I feel like it’s the perfect balance of everything.”
