The latest superhero flick to hit theaters might be coming your way courtesy of Leonardo DiCaprio, but this hero has quite a meaningful cause. The actor is reportedly in talks to produce a Captain Planet movie via his studio Appian Way Productions.
For those whose memories are a little foggy, Captain Planet and the Planeteers was an animated TV series that aired from 1990 to 1992 about a group of kids from around the world who are given magical rings by the Earth’s spirit, Gaia, that provide them with the power to control different elements of nature. The rings also allow them to together summon Captain Planet, a superhero who possesses the powers of the rings combined, but like the Earth, is weakened by pollutants.
This premise goes hand-in-hand with DiCaprio’s own work as an environmental activist, which means there will probably be some serious, unsubtle thematic hinting at the importance of environmental protection in the film.
Scream Queens‘ Glen Powell and his writing partner Jono Matt are in talks to pen the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and Paramount will partner with DiCaprio’s Appian Way on production.
We’re always down for another superhero flick, and with DiCaprio at the helm, we’re even more psyched. Now, what are the chances that Leo himself will star as Captain Planet?
