Proof of the afterlife? Shock as haunted theatre ghosts ‘captured on camera’

Construction workers were shocked to discover the ghostly pair in an image taken in the Edwardian Darlington Civic Theatre.

The playhouse, which opened in 1907, is being redesigned as the Darlington Hippodrome, and due to open next year.

Julian Cound, marketing officer for the theatre, said: “The pictures were taken by one of the guys on our construction team.

“They were flicking through the photos and pointed out the figures to me.”

The picture was posted on the theatre’s Facebook page.

Some viewers said the ghosts could be two of the haunted venue’s best known paranormal inhabitants.

Commenters claimed they could see a ghostly figure in a top hat, with a phantom woman in evening wear.

But sceptics have said it is just an optical illusion and there are no spectres there.

The theatre was opened by managing director Signor Rino Pepi, who is said to still haunt the venue.

He was a well-known quick change artist, but tragically died on November 17 1927, the same day he managed to get Anna Pavlova to perform there.

Some guests claim to have seen his top-hat wearing ghost and even been touched by him.

His ghost is said to manifest in the theatre whenever he hears The Dying Swan, which was Pavlova’s signature ballet.

Another well known ghost is known as the Lady and is thought to be the second figure in the image.

Mr Cound said: “She is seen on the stage.

“She has been seen watching performances and rehearsals from stage left, it has usually been ballet so perhaps she was a dancer?

“Another character in residence at the theatre is ‘Jimmy the Flyman’.

“Jimmy is thought to have worked up in the rigging, responsible for moving the scenery between acts.

“He is believed to have died after becoming entangled in ropes.

“‘Gordon’, the Door Keeper still does his rounds locking up the doors and he has been seen by various visitors to the theatre.”

Aside from human spectres, a small Pekinese dog, once owned by Signor Pepi, has also been seen.

It has been seen in the area of the former bar and in the middle dressing room corridor.

Sightings of the dog are said to have resembled a normal live animal.

In 1990, the remains of the dog were found during an earlier refurbishment in the place where most sightings had been.
