Britney Spears, aka our queen, just performed her first UK gig in five years. She nailed her Tuesday performance at the Apple Music Festival show, dancing and singing the night away in front of an excited crowd. But in the middle of one of her killer routines, something went awry. Spears was supposed to do a back walkover, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. The result was a small fall and an awkward interaction with a backup dancer. But don’t worry—Spears managed to recover pretty flawlessly.
“Last night I freaked out,” Spears told BBC Radio 1 in an interview. She revealed that her plan was to do a back walkover with the help of one of her male dancers, but she got cold feet. “There was a new guy there,” Spears said. “It was his first time protecting my back, and I couldn’t do it.” The singer acknowledged that the dancer seemed “really confident and strong.” “I should’ve felt more confident,” she said. “But I was scared.” TBH, we don’t blame her at all.
The back walkover was supposed to happen in the middle of a performance of Oops!…I Did It Again—one of Spears’ classic tunes. Brit began her walkover, fell a little, and immediately popped back up. She lifted her hands in the air and struck a pose to make the move seem intentional—and probably to communicate to her dancer that the back walkover wasn’t happening as planned. The two exchanged eye contact, and the dancer reacted accordingly. That was the end of that.
‘When I was younger I used to do backflips, and I would not attempt that now,” Spears said. “My son can do it now. Kids are fearless, but it inspires me. Because of that I put a back walkover in my show.”
You go, Brit! That’s braver than we would ever be. And we wish you the best of luck as you embark on your next back walkover. We’re sure you’ll nail it.
