A man was jailed for life after killing his sister and stabbing her son over money.
Angela MacKinnon, 55, of Australia, allowed her brother to move in with her family to help him out when he fell on hard times.
However, he repaid her kindness by killing her and injuring her teenage son just 18 months after moving in with them.
The court heard how 43-year-old John Michael MacKinnon of Perth, had consumed up to 14 beers and drugs on the day of the murder.
His sister and her 19-year-old son Jesse Henwood, had also been drinking when the siblings got into an argument over money.
Angela claimed that her brother owed her some money. She allegedly slapped him and he then pushed her onto the couch.
The teenager then ordered his uncle to leave his mother alone.
While Henwood went upstairs to his bedroom, John grabbed a hunting knife and stabbed his sister several times, the court heard.
Henwood heard his mother call for help before being confronted by his uncle who was covered in blood. John told his nephew that his mother was dead and that he was next.
John used the same knife to stab his nephew before fleeing the scene. He was arrested 10 hours later after police launched a manhunt to locate him.
Attorney Belinda Lonsdale said her client “lashed out and mentally lost it, but never intended to kill his sister.”
“He loved his sister and he is still coming to terms with the fact that he caused her death. It haunts him every day,” Lonsdale said.
Justice John Chaney accepted the fact that John did not intend to kill his sister and that he is remorseful, but he said the crime had been devastating to the family.
John was ordered to serve at least 18 years of his life sentence before being eligible for parole.
